The station is located behind the old city Convention Center in the block bounded by Brevard, Trade and 4th streets in about a year. The mall has two pavilions of restaurants, retail space covered by a large canopy.
About 20 to 24 buses can pick up passengers in the loading bays in its center.
It serves some 7,000 passengers who now change buses at The Square at Trade and Tryon streets.
Nations Bank designed and build it, while the city donated $7.9 million worth of land. It is jointly owned by the city and the NationsBank Community Development Corp., a subsidiary devoted to public-private redevelopment projects. The bank's share of profits from rentals go back into the project.
NationsBank officials said the project symbolizes their commitment to uptown.
``We have always been committed to the city's center,'' said Jim Palermo, an executive vice president with the bank. ``Few services are as important to our city as transit.''
