The Charlotte Regional Farmers' Market is located at 1801 Yorkmont Road, immediately adjacent to the new Charlotte Coliseum on a 22-acre site. The market incorporates 84,000 square feet of covered, all-season retail and wholesale buildings. It opened in 1984 on land donated by the City of Charlotte. The state runs the market and has spent $2.5 million on five metal buildings and parking lots.
The wholesale tenant provides products to the food service industry including chain stores, restaurants, hotels and retail stores.
Most of the fruits and vegetables sold at this market come from farmers within a 15 county area surrounding and including Mecklenburg County. However market customers today are likely to see more retired salesmen and businessmen, than farmers peddling produce they have grown and harvested. Farmers often bring a truckload of produce to the market, sell it to the vendors and leave. During the growing season, most farmers don`t have time to sell. The variety lasts as long as North Carolina's growing season, and includes farm-fresh produce, baked goods, hand-made crafts, plants, pumpkins and Christmas trees.
More than 365,000 customers patronize this market each year, during the March through December period.
