WSOC TV Station One of Charlotte's oldest television stations WSOC-TV first signed on the air as Channel 9 on April 29, 1957. Originally operating from temporary studios on Plaza Road Extension in Charlotte, WSOC-TV moved to the present complex on Tryon Street in July of 1959. Acquired by Cox Broadcasting Corporation on May 14, 1959, WSOC-TV was an affiliate of the NBC Television Network until July 1978, at which time it changed affiliation to ABC .

Representing the 28th largest market in the United States, WSOC-TV s Designated Market Area (DMA) now includes twenty-two counties in North and South Carolina covering a population of almost two million people.

Using such state-of-the-art processes and equipment as a full-time Bell Jet Ranger Helicopter named Chopper 9, a satellite truck named Livestar 9, and a weather radar system named Doppler 9, WSOC-TV s Eyewitness News produces eight newscasts Monday through Friday, five on Saturday and three on Sunday. WSOC-TV is everywhere you need to be to get the most accurate and up-to-date news and information. The Carolina News Link provides Channel 9 with live coverage from 4 television stations in North Carolina, two news bureaus in Gastonia and Rock Hill, and satellite reports from around the country and the world.

In order to provide additional coverage, WSOC-TV began broadcasting on the Eyewitness News Radio Network on May 11, 1989. This network, which consists of 17 radio stations in surrounding counties, carries the sound of the weeknight editions of the Eyewitness News 6 O clock Report.

Eyewitness News is a consistent leader and innovator of live local, national, and international news coverage. For example, in May 1982, while covering the Reverend Billy Graham s first crusade in Moscow, WSOC-TV was the first western news organization to use a Soviet communications satellite to relay live interviews and news coverage back to North Carolina.

Let's continue the tour. The first place we have to start is the "heart" of Charlotte, commonly know as The Square.
