The Charlotte Fire Department is headquartered in the Government Center.
The mission of the Charlotte Fire Department is to minimize the risk of fire and other hazards to the citizens of Charlotte.
To accomplish this mission, the Department provides response to and mitigation of fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, aircraft emergencies, high angle and confined space rescues, and other emergencies as they arise. These services are provided immediately to any person who has a need anywhere within the corporate limits of the City of Charlotte.
The division is staffed by seventeen civilian employees working three eight hour shifts on a twenty-eight (28) day rotating cycle. Each shift is comprised of one Telecommunicator II (shift supervisor) and two Telecommuicator I's. The remaining two divisional employees are the Telecommuicator III who is responsible for logistical and computer support and the Communications Manager: both of whom work Monday thru Friday 8-5.
The Communications Center utilizes an enhanced 911 telephone system as the primary public emergency access to the department. The E-911 system is utilized county wide with city fire calls being routed to our facility through the main public safety answering point. The Communications Center also receives requests for service through ringdown lines connected to both the Police Department and the county's communications center for EMS service and volunteer fire dispatch. A direct access non-emergency public information line is also located in the center. Each of the City's thirty fire stations are also connected to the Communications Center by a direct ringdown line in addition to their standard seven digit telephone services
The Communications Center operates a main frame based computer aided dispatch (CAD) system which allows for a more expedient dispatch mode than does a card stamp system. CAD dispatch allows vital information such as cross streets and hydrants as well as building inspection data to be available to company officers both at dispatch as well as during their response to incidents. CAD also allows for a more efficient tracking of company status during times of heavy call loads.
Radio dispatch for the Department utilizes a Motorola trunked 8OO mhz. system which provides for multiple incident operations on separate radio channels. This allows major incidents to be handled without interruption by radio traffic from other on going calls. The Communication Center's multiple console design allows a telecommuicator to concentrate on a major incident while the rest of the department's radio traffic is handled by the shifts other personnel. At present 12 employees of the Communications Center have completed the APCO 40 hour Telecommunicator course with the remaining employees due to attend the class as staffing permits. During the last fiscal year the Communications Center handled 48,136 dispatched incidents. For more information contact the division at (704)336-2441.
