Education Center This is the Education Center of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System is the largest in the Carolinas and the 27th largest in the nation. The vision of the school system is "to ensure that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System becomes the premier urban, integrated system in the nation in which all students acquire the knowledge, skills and values necessary to live rich and full lives as productive and enlightened members of society".

Magnet Schools

Students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System still undergo mandatory bussing to racially desegregate the schools. As alternatives to bussing the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System utilizes stand-alone schools in racially balanced neighborhoods, midpoint schools between predominately black and white neighborhoods that result in shorter bus rides and magnet schools. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System began the magnet school program in 1992. A magnet school features a special program designed to attract students who have interest or talents in a particular area. Magnet schools feature the required curriculum of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System but also provide other activities and learning activities.

It is believed that because of shifting populations and the aging of neighborhoods, the magnet concept will better utilize the physical facilities now available. Magnet schools have also been used to improve racial balance and emphasize particular subject matter or particular instruction philosophies.

Students are admitted to the magnet schools through a lottery program. If one child in the family is admitted the others are admitted automatically. Once a child is admitted, they continue there through the last grade at that school.

Transportation is provided by the school system.

Board of Education

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System is governed by a nine member Board of Education, whose members are elected on a nonpartisan basis from the county as a whole to serve on a rotating four-year term. One of their duties is to appoint the superintendent.

The Board of Education holds its regular meeting on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month in the board room on the fourth floor of the Education Center. These meeting are open to the public and follow an agenda available in the board room prior to the meeting. One of the two monthly meetings are televised on public television.
