Discovery Place, a major attraction in the southeast and one of the best science centers in the country, is located in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. The museum attracts nearly 700,000 visitors and serves over 240,000 school children each year. From the moment they walk in the door, children and adults are intrigued, stimulated, and excited by this 140,000-square-foot wonderland of hands-on learning opportunities.
Discovery Place has long been considered one of the top science museums in the country. In fact, in 1992 the Southeast Tourism Society picked Discovery Place as winner of the Travel Attraction of the Year Award. The society represents travel trade groups, tourism destinations and government agencies from nine states.
In 1991 Discovery Place underwent an $18 million dollar expansion opening its Michael J. Smith Wing, which includes a three-story OMNIMAX Theatre, the Kelly Space Voyager Planetarium. The Omnimax is a state-of-the-art, 300-seat theater that surrounds you with sight, sound and motion. The tilted-dome theater doubles as a planetarium.When it opened it was only the third such theater in the Southeast.
It is housed in a 50,000-square-foot addition to Discovery Place at Church and 6th streets and includes a restaurant and gift shop space.
Other top attractions at Discovery Place include a three-story tropical rain forest, an ocean touch pool, and much, much more. In addition to the permanent exhibits on biology, geology, physics, and chemistry, the museum hosts traveling exhibits that brings in the latest in science and technology. The museum is open every day of the year except Christmas and Thanksgiving. Annual family memberships entitle the holder to unlimited visits.
